It wasn't "art music" when it was written, it is now. Of course, modern classical music was intended to be "art music". Beethoven wasn't, Mozart certainly wasn't. The trend seems to have started with Beethoven, the "art for art's sake" syndrome. Now that is the dominant thought in the bag, I'm afraid.

Can anyone tell me how 'Art Music' should be defined, as opposed to 'Classical Music', or is there no distinction ?
This is probably not relevant but it conjured up definitions of program music vs. absolute music. But, then, I think I am going the wrong direction with this. I haven't heard the distinction of "art music" in this context.
