I have always liked the cheerful and jovial first of the Op.31 sonatas best of the three, not least because of the 2nd movement Andante grazioso! For me it is absolutely elegant, noble.

In the first movement, Beethoven gives the pianist a musical stutter: the right hand seems to reach the down beat a fraction of a second before the left hand! Beethoven's sense of humor was very subtle at times.
