My vote would have to go to the 2nd movement of the Piano Concerto #5. I don't know it, just moves me, it a bit sad sounding really and also the 9th Symphony, 3rd movement. It's just so beautiful to listen to!

yes, 2nd movement of appassionata... I am listening to it right now.

but the third movement is by far the best of that sonata, though not "nice".

The first mvt. of his first symphony is glorious, with poetic underpennings of sostenuto solo flute.

The last 9 minues of the Missa Solemnis are a really masterful contender for title of the most beautiful... i have yet to hear a more sublime rendition of the chorus Dona Nobis Pacem ...

Now if we hit the piano sonatas... oops ... and then there are those 5 glorious piano and cello works... ooops and then there's that 2nd movement of the 5th piano concerto... and then there's that entire 4th piano conceerto... ooops... the whole body of Beethoven's works just moves from beautiful to most beautiful ... ok... so I still can't make up my mind on that one... but those last 9 minutes of the Missa get my vote for that spot if ...

Slow movements of late quartets must qualify as being his most 'beautiful' music, in the conventional sense at least, as opposed to dramatic or turbulent

In Beethoven's case, and only in his case, naming a favorite piece, or movement, is impossible.

Having said that, the 2nd mov. of the "Emperor" Cto. has an expressiveness, deep into the man's soul. It is one of my favorites.

I changed my mind from the above. It is the FIRST movement of the Appassionata sonata which is the most beautiful.

I must agree with the adagio of Sym.9 and the
largo from the Triple Conc.In almost 70 years, I have never heard music more profound than these two movements. Beethoven's Beethoven?
Sort of like the color question of a favorite.
I can never choose. With Beethoven there is no question, those are it!

There is innumeral to chose from!

Many movements breaths sheer beauty from the first to the last note:
                            Cavatina from Quartet Op.130
slow mvmt. of Concerto No.5 Op.73(favourite!)
                            Credo of Missa Op.123
                            Leonore's aria from Fidelio
                            etc... etc...

But if you had to pick not only isolated movements, but rather entire works, would it remain the same?

At large I would consider the Pastoral Symphony and the Violin Concerto of most overwhelming and striking beauty throughout.

Allrigt::: Then, there is the late quartets, pf.sonatas etc... etc... (%)
(Did this make anyone any wiser?)

The slow movement is pretty nice, too--such sublimity sandwiched between two driving, energetic movements.

Though I have not heard a huge amount of Beethoven's work, I'd say the Benedictus from the Sanctus movement from Missa Solemnis is one of the most beautiful works I've heard. His violin concerti and sonatas are also moving (something about good composers and violins).
