I like this performance and a vast improvement on the modern norm to my ears, even with Beethoven's battered old instruments. Interestingly on this CD they do a far better interpretation with this quartet than op18/4, which i assume is the easier of the two technically.

I can say that authentic performance of Beethoven string quartets is still in its infancy at the moment.
Don't give up on us Roders!
I have this very cherished CD,of B's String quartets 0p.18/4 & 0p. 59/3 exquisitely played by the Schuppanzigh Quartett.
I shall look forward to you posting more of B's string quartets
Much appreciated!

As I mentioned I think their treatment of the C minor quartet is not so hot, certainly the finale is very tame, but op59/3 is much better - i think the first movement benefits particularly from period instruments. The only modern recording i play of this piece is by the Lindsays (their first recording of it) and, I usually by pass the first movement, (though their treatment of the remainder is very good).

Dear B lovers: Have you ever heard the String Quartet #15 in A minor? I have a copy of a performance done by The Alexander String Quartet that's outstandingly played.

That (op132) is a favourite for many people. But there is no recording on authentic instruments at the moment so you will not be hearing it here. As I have said this genre is in its infancy in the authentic movmement - I only have op135 out of all the late quartets so far (by the Eroica Quartet). I do have a recording of Op132 by the Fitzwilliam Quartet (now long deleted) that is very good indeed, largely because of their unusually sensitive treatment and great sense of ensemble.

Rod,
I would love to hear it, especially if it is Bruggen!
Well I hope it stimulates more interest than 59/3 played with B's own instruments. Haven't got Bruggen's set, it was perversly deleted before i could get my hands on it. But you'll get the Hanover band and be greatful!

Rod,
You're right, I will. Since I only have the Hanover 9th, I will enjoy to hear some of their 4th. Thanks,

I don't know if I speak for myself here, and I believe not, but I've been downloading everything from op.1 onwards, I simply don't post my comments, even though sometimes I do. It's not lack of interest, it's just not knowing much to make a post about it. Please, keep the mp3s coming.
