    Favourite Cello Sonata performance?

    Hi all,

I was interersted in knowing your favourite cello sonata performance as these are an incredible body of work (as I'm sure you all know!). Just in case you're not sure, I'm referring to the 5 cello sonata's.

My favourite is Rostropovich/Richter, however I'm keen to listen to others as well.

    cheers

There is simply no better chamber music for the cello than Beethoven's sonatas and variations with piano. If you are interested in recordings on period instruments this music is particularly well served, look out for the last three sonatas at the mp3 page.

I am in agreement with Rod here, and if you are interested in period versions, which I think is most suited for chamber works,
I have a CD (listening to now), on Beethoven's Complete Cello Music,
performed by, Melvyn Tan on (fortepiano)
      and Anthony Pleeth, (cello)

These are really quite lovely and a very sympathetic rendition and his playing catches the naunce of the pieces.

You may find the CD on the Hyperion Label http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/composer_page.asp?

      Scroll down to CD no.7

Which versions do you have Rod?

My favorite performances of the complete sonatas are Pablo Casals and Rudolf Serkin. Casals has nover been matched in either technique or expression, and Serkin is an outstanding pianist, something that is required in these works, where the pianist works pretty hard!

The five cello sonatas rank highly among Beethoven's instrumental works. I believe it was Joseph Linke who was an excellent cellist, for whom Beethoven had composed these works. For more information here's an interesting link:

Thanks for the useful information everyone.
Gurn, you're right (once again) stating that the pianist works pretty hard. I bought two days ago the rostropovich/richter set and as a matter of fact I haven't listened yet to the 4 & 5 sonatas, since the first 3 have absorbed me.
