Sounds great Muriel! Hip Hip Hooray for PBS! Long may it reign! I also watch all the classical concerts that they present. If it wasn't for that station I don't know what I would do! I watch many a classical Great Performance on that station. Did your station happen to broadcast the program I watched "Keeping Score?"

I will keep watching for it, and I saw today that Arkiv has the DVD already for just $16, so maybe I'll go that route. Of course, that means a player and sound system, cabinet..... sigh!

But right now however, it is the Symphony in C major - #34 - K 338 - W. Amade Mozart. Very nice choice for a summer's eve.

Nice choice Mozart! For me it was a real musical potpourri day starting out with Piano Sonata #9, Mozart's The Magic Flute and Haydn's Symphony #94 in G The Surprise by the Hanover Band! I remember playing parts of this when I was playing piano as a beginner way back when.
Oh, by the way, I get reruns of Billy Graham too!

For me this lovely evening, it is the Trio in D major for Violin, Viola & Cello - Op 9 #2 - Louis Beethoven - L'Archibudelli. Excellent rendition, if all HIP performers were this thoroughly good, Rod wouldn't need to be arguing with us all the time!

On this lovely Thursday AM, it is the Trio in e minor for Piano & Strings - #2 - Op 92 - Camille St. Saens. Very Classical sounding Late Romantic.

Before I did listen Vienna Canons from Gauli Mauli to Cosa Nox, now pretty serious with the fiery Spanish Cristosomo. Gooooood!
Later? What else than a 'chambry' Franzl?

I am listening to a work I just bought, it is Johann Baptist Vanhal's Missa Solemnis in C major. Hey! This guy composed some nice tunes. He was a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart. The disc also has another mass called the Missa Pastoralis in G major. Both works are laced with traces of Haydn and early Mozart. Wonderful listening.

                    "Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739 - 1813)

Johann Baptist Vanhal was born in 1739 to a Czech peasant family, and received his early training from a local musician. From these humble beginnings he was able to earn a living as a village organist and choirmaster. It was a Countess, who heard him playing the violin, that took him to Vienna where she arranged lessons in composition with the great Dittersdorf. Further patronage helped him to travel and gain further knowledge of music. Though a temporary mental breakdown happened at the age of 35, he was now moving in exalted musical company, and it is reported he played quartets with Haydn, Mozart and Dittersdorf.

So famous did he become that he was probably the first musician to earn a living entirely from composing without any other appointment. He had to be a prolific writer to meet the demands made upon him he, and attributed to him are 100 quartets, at least 73 symphonies, 95 sacred works, and almost countless instrumental and vocal works. He often had a tendency to explore, but his greatest gift was an unending flow of memorable melodies.

Such was his success that within a few years of his symphonies being written, they were being performed around the world, and as far distant as the United States. In later life, however, he rarely moved from Vienna where he was also an active teacher."

                    Also this, from a diary:
                    "Last night I went to a recital at (?) house. The players were not the best, but there was some science among them;
                    First violin - Haydn
                    Second Violin - Vanhal
                    Viola - Mozart
                    Cello - Dittersdorf"

                    Cool!
                    P. So are you now all curled up with Franzl? The Octet perhaps? For me, it is the Trio in a minor for Piano & Strings - Op 50 - Tchaikovsky. Almost too much melodic invention for one piece of music!

What better way indeed!? Was that enough Vanhal info for you?
Now though, we start the day with the "Little g minor", Symphony #25 - K 173dB - W. Amade Mozart - Academy of Ancient Music/Hogwood. Excellent!

Gurn, wht a lvoely choice and this morning I heard his Marche Slave Op 31 with conductor Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Very nice. Also later today Beethoven's Romance in G Opus 40 by the orpheus Chamber Orchestra and his Symphony #1; and Seven Variations on a Theme by Mozart (love that one). Then tonight they'll be playing his Piano Trio Opus 121 also called "Kakadu Variations". Anyone know the reason for this?

A VERY BEAUTIFUL trio that is, it's variations on the theme "Ich bin der schneider Kakadu.", from someone I don't recall. Very recommendable
