    The Weakest Link

    Gems from Ann Robinson.

Recent questions asked on the 'Weakest Link Quiz:

Question: Who wrote Rhapsody in Blue?
    Contestant: "Beethoven"

Question: Which composer wrote the 'Enigma Variations'?
    Contestant: "Verdi"

Does this surprise you so far as the music going public in Britian is concerned?
For instance, would the German or Austrian population make such mistakes about Europes classical past?

No surprise there Amalie! I suspect here in Britain we would probably have the lowest rating on cultural knowledge in Europe, after all in virtually every other area we come bottom - the worst this, the highest that!

Of course we all like to denigrate our own, but we in America are the pits int hat regard. Most people I have spoken with about music have only heard Beethoven's name, not his music so they could easily confuse him with Gershwin. To tumble to Ralph Vaughn Williams and the "Enigma Variations" is too much to expect!

Aren't the enigma varations composed by sir. Edward Elgar round/about 1901???
        Or didn't you mean that....?

I'm not surprised, Amalie. Upon listening to the game show Jeopardy a couple of weeks ago a question came up regarding "what Beethoven's Symphony was firstly dedicated to Napoleon and written in 1803", no one got it right and one person even said, "uh, his 9th Symphony"????

the west in infected and infested with hip-hop, bad pop music, movies, media, sex driven media, pornography (soft and hardcore), ignorance and excessive techonolgy. Beethoven, isn't that the dude that rings on a cell phone? Last night at Carnegie Hall, in the middle of Vaughan Williams, "A Sea Symphony" some knuckle heads phone went off to the digitized version of the 'Fur Elize'.

              ...sigh...

Oh well, look on the bright side, At least they connected the 9th with Beethoven.

                      Ruud,
Well, you ARE strange to them, at least you are in the minority which is what makes you strange. Don't let it depress you, rather, revel in it! This is what makes you different and, dare I say it, a cut above. It is not elitism to point out to you that your intelligence and curiousity have set you apart. Make the most of it!

PS - Amalie is knowing me too well, but this won't stop me from being a wiseass from time to time

                          Space,
Nah, that would be too easy! But if Alex Trebeck was as bitchy as Anne Robinson, that show would have a whole new world of potential!

I, too, composed in the "classical" way at your age. I still do when I get a good chance, but then I liked being the strange one. (Good grief, but I still do for that matter!) Just remember that your own tastes and experiences have greater potential than that of your friends--you can enjoy classical as well as any other type of music where they are only limited to current trends. Now, for me, THAT is strange!
