"At the funeral there were 20,000 people (from some accounts) crowding the streets to witness the great procession, which wound through the streets from the courtyard of the Schwarzspanierhaus to the church in the Alsergasse and to the suburb of Wahring where Grillparzer's eloquent funeral oration waw rendered by the actor Anschutz and Beethoven was buried in the parish cemetery. The pallbearers were eight Kapellmeister; the torchbearers included many of Beethoven's closest friends as well as Vienna's leading musicians. A choir sang a solemn Miserere to the somber accompaniment of trombones. Close behind the coffin followed numerous friends and admirers, led by Stephen and Gerhard von Breuning and Nikolaus Johann."
