On December 8, 1813 -- Almost totally deaf, Ludwig van Beethoven conducts the premiere of his Symphony No. 7 in a benefit concert at the University of Vienna. This piece was dedicated to the Count Moritz von Fries. Wagner called it 'the apotheosis of the dance'. The 72 bar introduction has the distinction of being the longest of any of the symphonies.

With your post in mind I did put the 7th into my walkman this morning. Placed between the Pastorale and the 8th, I love this symphony very much. These three are a bit a special unit for me. Not a wonder there are ten years between, to the 9th.
