I was having quite a bad day yesterday. I got in the car in the evening and turned on the local classical station to find Beethoven's Grosse Fuge being played by the Takacs Quartet. It's not exactly a cheerful piece, but it cheered me right up anyway, I tell you!

      Hello Gerd,
As requested, I gave that a listen. I have to be honest with you, I found it pretty dreary, turgid stuff. Sorry.

I thought that was fast until I heard the Emmerson quartet who are even quicker, which to my mind makes a scramble of it - it is after all marked Molto Allegro, not prestissimo!

Personally I prefer the slightly more restrained tempo of the Quartet Italiano

The Quartetto Adorno's performance is quite exciting, I find. The Emerson is really a mess!

I've been listening to a bunch of WoO works by Beethoven. Here's a piano quartet (WoO 36, N? 3) he wrote before he left Bonn for Vienna. I'm sure you recognise the material used in a later work of his!

Very nice, Quijote. I haven't listened to WoO 36 in a few years, and it's great to revisit them. I haven't heard a period instrument version of these works before. I think I prefer the modern instrument recording, myself.
