I'm using the version clipped below for reference.
Victor Lederer in his book on LvB's Chamber Music, says the Grosse Fuge starts with a "might leap for the full ensemble" (which I totally hear) then "roars out the four note underlying theme," which I hear from :09 to :15 seconds in. Four notes. Got it. But what are the notes that follow from :15 to :18? Is that a sort of tail to the basic four-note theme? Then you get a pause and a short series of vehement statements also separated by pauses until :29. Are those "trills"? They just don't sound like trills. But Lederer refers to a "snarling trill."
Then from 14:11 -- 14:22 there's what I assume is the "thematic recap." However, I only hear two themes reprised: from the 1st and 2nd Fugues. Where are all the other themes?
Thanks for any info!
