    Netherlands Bach Society

2021 was their centenary year and there's a list of their achievements in this link. For a small country, the Netherlands punches above its weight in so many ways and music is just one of these.

They are a wonderful group who have done so much for Bach appreciation with consistently high standards of performance. Happy 100!

I dearly love this phenomenal aria from "St. Matthew Passion"; it's like a tender lullaby. I'd have to say "St. Matthew Passion" just grows in my estimation on every hearing of it - as if such a thing were even possible!!

Absolutely glorious, along with Erbarme dich, my 2 favourite arias from the St.Matthew passion.

Yes, incredible, and this isn't easy music; very modern sounding in terms of dissonances and the unpredictability of the melody line. To partially explain my love for this music is to paraphrase John F. Kennedy..."we (love it) not because it's easy but because it's hard".

Better, in my opinion, is Erbarme dich:

(this version is too fast for my taste).

            P.S.: Peter beat me.

Shades of Albinoni's "Adagio" in this aria and Bach was an admirer of that Venetian composer.

Maybe, but that doesn't substract beauty from the aria, I think.

I wasn't inferring that, nor that Albinoni's work was inferior. My ideas come from a program I presented in our local community called "Under the Influence" about how composers influenced and referenced the work of each other, whether consciously or unconsciously.

Yes but not dogmatic about it. I think a lot has been learned but I'm not of the school that insists Bach should not be played on the piano or that Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven have to be performed on a fortepiano. It's great that we have both options these days.
