    Beethoven and Birtwistle

    "A bag of Bagatelles".

Here's a brief review by Norman Lebrecht: I laughed when I read that Birtwistle said he didn't understand his own music. That makes two of us.

I've never liked Birtwistle's music, sorry but I really don't get it!

I feel the same way but these have received good reviews from the usual suspects, which include Norman Lebrecht. He's regarded by some as the quintessential music critic, but I find him more an unreliable, irritating 'biographer' in the Schindlerian sense and his book "The Maestro Myth" WAS itself mythological!! (One of those double-ironies I've mentioned elsewhere here!) I actually contacted him about his valedictory written when Carlos Kleiber died, which described him as "...Not a Great Conductor". He hit the roof and said "you take that back: I didn't say that". He was trying to hive off the blame to a sub-editor. No doubt he's endured that legacy since 2004!! (Clue: a 'sub' will only provide headlines based upon the content of a piece!!)
