        Sorry, no.

A further clue: he referred to himself as "the best of the second-raters."

So you can't mean Wagner then.

            No, it is not Wagner.
The clues again: had to be prodded by his wife to compose, and called himself "the best of the second-raters".

No way could this be him, there are a few second-raters that better Wagner.

Peter has it. Richard Strauss was lazy and his wife had to push him to get to work. Also he did call himself the "best of the second raters".

This is very similar to the writer W. Somerset Maugham's judgment of himself: "In the very front of the second rank." I think both these artists underrated themselves. In Maugham's case at least, I USED to think that. Now I see he is slowly sinking out of sight, some of you youngsters have probably not even heard of him. Nonetheless I still find him great reading. Strauss at any rate seems to be keeping his reputation, except no doubt with Rod (and perhaps Franz). Those who cannot appreciate Wagner's divine harmonics can probably not appreciate Strauss's either, as they were based on Wagner's.

At a performance of perhaps his most famous composition an old lady in the audience screamed repeatedly, Rubbish! Rubbish!.

                        Which composer was this?
                        And the piece of music?

I love Maugham's "Of Human Bondage" and "The Painted Veil" these novels protrayed some chilling characters ,would rather read him than Virginia any day.
I adore Richard Strauss his compositions for the voice are wonderful.Guess I'm one of those oldsters.

                            Mr. Chaszz,
Strauss's Horn Concerto alone is enough to make his reputation. Perhaps it is only that Wagner travelled the wrong road there!?!

Name the scholar who in 1859 wrote a book about Beethoven that introduced the concept of 'Idealmusik,' the idea being that the music of Beethoven had as much to do with ethics as with pure tone.

Would it be the background music, Joy? In the movie, the opening of the Missa Solemnis is played which certainly was not the case at B's funeral.

I think Peter has answered this already. My PC has been giving trouble for the past three weeks or so, and I am finding it hard to catch up on all the postings.
