Well, of course, what you will find most easily and what most people are familiar with are his symphonies, he wrote 104 (!) of them, most very good, none bad. He was also the inventor of the modern String Quartet, of which he wrote 68 (certain), all very good, some excellent. This is only the tip of the iceberg of his oeuvre. I would suggest the following, based on easy availability and quality;
the last 12 symphonies (Called the London Symphonies)
The 6 Quartets of Op 76
Any of the last 10 Piano Trios
Any of the last 15 Piano Sonatas
The Sinfonia Concertante in Bb for Violin, Cello, Oboe, Bassoon & Orchestra
The Trumpet Concerto
The Cello Concertos in D & C

If that doesn't give you not only an impression of him but a taste for more, I would be surprised!

Yes Gurn has suggested a very good list and I'd also add his oratorio 'The Creation', The double variations for piano in F minor, The Piano sonatas no.20 in C minor and other selected symphonies nos.6,7,8,39,45,88,92.

Mozart... Mozart... The best composer ever. As Brahms advised, all you have to do is listen to Nozze di Figaro, and you'll understand, while you wonder, that nothing Beethoven composed could even come close! Haydn was one discerning fellow!

This has been a very interesting read. I love discovering the connection between composers. Is there any connection between Mendelssohn and Schumann?

Schumann was a great admirer of Mendelssohn and was deeply affected by his early death. Mendelssohn though admiring Schumann was a little cooler in his enthusiasm - he confessed to Clara Schumann that he didn't care much for the celebrated piano concerto! Mendelssohn conducted the first performance of Schumann's 2nd Symphony at a Gewandhaus concert.

I've watched Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutti live and, although there were no 'bad notes' as such, the music for large stretches failed to hold my interest. I have had this experience with other Mozart vocal pieces too. Sorry, perhaps its just me?!

Well you can probably find just as many people who would say the same about Beethoven! In a sense then yes it is you, not Mozart!
