I love the overtures to Don Giovani and the Magic Flute. With Beethoven it's Coriolan and Consecration of the House. Mendelssohn's Ruy Blas and Hebrides, I could go on here forever!
Who was it who said that all the drama of Fidelio, intensely moving that it is, is nonetheless condensed in a quite masterly fashion into Leonora No 3!
Of course, all of B's are fine, and also several of Rossini's, but I have to agree with Lysander, La Nozze de Figaro Overture has more music and "hooks" packed into a mere 4' 22" than any other piece of music I know.

That's my opinion, I may be wrong.

I also enjoy a good rousing performance of the 1812 Overture. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and The Magic Flute are among my favourites. For Beethoven, The Consecration of the House, Ritterballet, and King
Stephen are all excellent to listen too. I have the Nicolus Esterhazy Sinfonia with Bela Drahos cond. CD of Beethoven's Overtures, a pretty good CD if you're looking to purchase his Overtures.
Fidelio's overture is my favorite, as far as majestic, powerful overtures is concerned. The overture to Verdi's La Traviata, is my favorite romantic one.

There are so many. I love Tchaikovsky 1812 as well, and also his Hamlet & Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture. I love Mendelssoh's Hebrides & Midsummer Night's Dream. I love Mozart's Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail & Die Zauberfloete. I love Beethoven's Fidelio, King Stephen, Coriolan & Nameday Overtures.

Has anyone heard the latest recording of Beethoven's 'Macbeth Overture'?
Performed in Brittany, by the National Orchestra of Brittany, and arranged by Willem Holsbergen, which was released earlier this year.
Holsbergen believes that without a doubt, 'Macbeth' would have been a great Opera that the world lacks because Beethoven never finished his sketches.
